RadioShack Closing Hundreds of Stores - Panopticon - 02-18-2006

"DALLAS — RadioShack's troubles deepened Friday, as the electronics retailer announced it would close
up to 10 percent of its 7,000 stores after a report of weak fourth-quarter earnings."

Store closing sales anyone??

My gut feeling is that it's going to be the more populated areas that lose their 'Shacks. The ma and pa operated ones in small communities do quite well. I used to work at the one in my hometown of about 3,000 people. The store did VERY well.

thousands of unemployed Radio Shack workers.

There's a movie in there somewhere--or at least an SNL skit.

I don't understand why these stores still exist. I love that they sell some nerdy electronics stuff but everything else is overpriced garbage.

Or all they try to sell you are cell phones. For real. I wonder if they figured out that business model really pissed people off enough to not bother anymore.

Re: RadioShack Closing Hundreds of Stores - elmo3 - 02-18-2006

Actually, their universal remote controls are the best. They use the best stuff from Universal Electronics, and their external design is far superior to Universal's own One For All series.

I *love* RS universal remotes. I wouldn't have any other. Bang for the buck, nothing else comes close.

> I love that they sell some nerdy electronics stuff...

The nerdy stuff is their bread and butter.

The dumbass who has been running thc company (one has to wonder how a fake theology degree qualifies him to run a national chain of electronics stores) has been trying to get them to compete with Best Buy and Circuit City in consumer electronics and has been choking their core business.

Now they're discovering that competing in the cut-throat consumer electronics world isn't a big-profit generator.

Which anyone who has been around to see Crazy Eddie, the Wiz, 42nd Street Photo, [your local chain store here], etc. collapse could have told them.

I don't go into Radio Shack very often because they never stock what I'm looking for anymore: circuit boards, project boxes, LED's, resistors, capacitors, plugs, cables, adapters, power bricks, soldering tips... they've forced me to buy them online or to make the haul to the nearest electronics supply place.

If I need a new cell phone, I can get that from the cell phone kiosk at the mall or from Amazon -- Why would anyone go to Radio Shack for that?

Why?

What are you asking us for? If you have questions... THEY have the answers!!!!

Re: RadioShack Closing Hundreds of Stores - Silencio - 02-18-2006

POMTL, Jimmy!

I always get a slightly dirty feeling when I walk into a Radio Smack for those little esoteric electronic/phone parts I always seem to need. Their stuff is overpriced, their sales droids are clueless, and you have to wade through a bunch of cell phone stuff (and now iPod stuff) to get at what you want.

There's a Radio Shack only three blocks away from me, an easy walk for spur of the moment little purchases. Bet they get the axe...

Re: RadioShack Closing Hundreds of Stores - Guitarman - 02-18-2006

I feel bad for the people who are going to be thrown out of work.

You're right, they don't have any of the nerdy stuff anymore and their batteries, which used ot be a great cheap alternative to duracell et al, are now as expensive or more expensive than the premium brands.
