Apple Loss Prevention - bruceko - 03-27-2008

I received an email from Apple Loss prevention stating that the local police had received an Ipod that is registed to me. It lists the local police officer contact info. Is this gegit?

Stupid question: have you been missing an iPod???

Re: Apple Loss Prevention - C(-)ris - 03-27-2008

Call the local PD(look it up in the phone book, don't use the number in the email) and ask if there is an officer with that name. Simple enough.

Re: Apple Loss Prevention - bruceko - 03-27-2008

To be honest I am not really sure.
We have 3 daughters and probably a dozen ipods of various generations around the house. Who knows what they have done with them

What was the actual email address of the sender? I have not heard of any "Apple Loss Prevention" before.

Re: Apple Loss Prevention - bruceko - 03-27-2008

lossprevention@apple.com

Re: Apple Loss Prevention - mikebw - 03-27-2008

Well it seems like a valid address, of course it could be spoofed.
I would call Apple to see if that is real.

But, as C(-)ris said, you could just call the police to see if they have any record of such a case. You could even call back the number in the email, but just be sure not to give away any personal information.

Re: Apple Loss Prevention - GGD - 03-27-2008

A google search on the email address comes up with exactly one hit, which is your post in this thread.

Do a search on the phone number that they gave for the police, see if it really is your local police. Smells a bit like a phishing scheme.

Look at the mail headers, did it originate from Apple's mail server?

And did you ever give Apple the email address that this message was sent to?

you have 3 daughters, any do you need more that 3-4 iPods?

also, I think if you log on to Apple, there might be a way to see which products you have registered
