iPhone in Europe - abevilac - 03-28-2008 I just got back from a week in Paris and before I went I loaded up my iPhone w/ music & videos for the trip. I had heard that you probably don't want to check emails or use the phone while abroad due to high roaming charges, but I thought that if I put the phone in airplane mode and shut off the email account, I'd be ok. I also assumed that I'd be able to tap into free WiFi at bistros, etc w/out charge, but I thought I'd check w/ ATT before I left. The tech guy said that the only way not to be charged fees while in Europe was to keep the entire phone off. He said that I couldn't even use the iPhone as an "iPod." I thought that was crazy but I did shut down the whole thing and kept it off most of the time there. I did, however turn it on once to listen to some music, but the rest of the functions were still in "off" mode. I'll have to wait until my next billing cycle to see if my listening to a little music made a difference. What do you all think? Re: iPhone in Europe - finn - 03-28-2008 I travel to Europe and elsewhere overseas all of the time and have never had a problem. I put the phone on airplane mode when I am listening to music, watching videos etc.. The only time I have incurred a charge is when I forgot to connect to a free wifi signal and checked email or a website. Re: iPhone in Europe - finn - 03-28-2008 quick question, how do I have picture show up instead of link on my signature? Thanks! Re: iPhone in Europe - abevilac - 03-28-2008 So, you're saying that you can check email at free wifi places? Re: iPhone in Europe - finn - 03-28-2008 Yes. I just make sure that the wifi network is selected in my settings. By putting Re: iPhone in Europe - finn - 03-28-2008 Thanks voodoo! Is the snow all melted over there? We just got 6 inches of heavy wet snow here in the Albany, NY area hilltowns. Let's see if I did this right. Re: iPhone in Europe - abevilac - 03-28-2008 Thanks, finn -- looks as if we got 2 questions answered in < 8 posts! Let's see if I did this right. The beast in my signature is now just a six inch heap with a carrot on top. He was six foot tall. All other snow has gone, very short lived. Re: iPhone in Europe - finn - 03-28-2008 Glad to help abevilac. It has only taken me 8 years to figure out how to put a picture in my signature! Glad that we solved your question a little quicker. Quick side note, if you are surfing via wifi you do have airplane mode off. If a call comes in while surfing you can and will get charged. Not sure what happens if you don't answer. |
