Which is the newer design for MBP power adapters? - richorlin - 03-31-2008

The rectangular shaped one or the smaller, square shaped one?

And doesn't the older design have a problem with the strain relief at the adapter end, but the newer ones have a problem with the strain relief at the magsafe end?

I didn't realize there was problems with either adapter. Personally, every broken adapter I have seen was the result of someone not being careful enough with it. They aren't made to be pulled on hard, bent around or stretched.

I have seen 2 different sizes of mag-safe adapters. Here's my experience:

I have the larger one for my MBP, 2,16GHz machine. My boss has the 17" MBP, and also has the larger one. Although I could swear that it's not the same size as the one I have, it looks smaller.

My sister has a white MB, with the smaller one. The larger power adapter from the MBP charges the MB just fine. I can't speak for the reverse - the MB charger charging the MBP.

The original MBP 85w version has a very short (useless) strain relief. That was replaced w/ a version with a somewhat larger, but still useless strain relief. And that one was replaced by one that is compact and looks identical to the MB adapter.

I'm pretty sure the smaller charger, for the MB, will charge a MBP, it will just do it much slower since it's 60w vs. 85w (or some sort of difference).

The newer chargers for the MBP are smaller like the MB's. This changed in the Summer last year. I have an original 2.16Ghz with the original 'large' charger...and then I got a 2.4Ghz when they finally came out and it came with the smaller adapter.

All of them will work with every model though and are all interchangeable (MBP and MB).

As stated the newest MBP chargers are the smaller size, similar to the MB chargers. They are, however, still 85W and not 60W.

Then you must've seen very few problematic adapters! I had my first mbp for a little over a year & had to have the adapter replaced because the connector end was separating from the cord.

As Chupa Chupa pointed out - the first adapters had a much shorter (and useless) strain relief. When the replacement adapter came, it was VERY noticeable. The old strain relief was only half as long as the new one.

And no, I certainly never misused the adapter - I made sure not to strain the connector - never had it bent tightly, NEVER pulled the cord (I always unplugged it by grasping the connector itself).

So yeah, I'd say the old ones are bordering on defective. Mine came apart after a year of normal wear and tear & I've heard of quite a few others with the exact same problem.
