Taco Bell...I think I won a point - samintx - 03-31-2008

Last year I was in Taco Bell and noticed the kitchen people didn't have on gloves. One of the girls would stop, come take cash or an order, then go back and do the food.

I was appalled. I wrote a letter to Taco Bell as a customer and shareholder stating I had talked to the manager and asked why his kitchen people didn't wear gloves. He told me "they are supposed to wash their hands". I told him what I had seen and he seemed unconcerned.

Well, nothing happened so this year when TB sent stockholders a questionnaire I told them all this.

Today when I went in...all kitchen people had on GLOVES! the girl that took the money/order took off her gloves and put them on when she went to the kitchen again.

Hurrah! maybe my protesting did do some good for all.

Stockholders get the boards attention more easily than "joe (or jane) public"...

Another thing that gets their attention is a visit from the Health Department, after an "anonymous tip".

The LAST thing that can get their attention is when they're caught spitting in a Sheriffs Deputy's food. That happened to the "old" Taco Bell about 10 years ago... The reject at the drive through window did this where the Deputy could see it through the window.
The Sheriffs dept closed the place in 10 minutes, the Health Department closed it PERMANENTLY a couple days later.
Most disgusting fast food restaraunt I've ever been in.

They finally tore that building down, and built a new Taco Bell...
The "new" one is very clean.. (at least there's no rotting food on the tables, and bugs on the floor like the old one).

Yup.

They should simply skip the menu at Taco Bell. I'll have two foods and a drink, please.

Sam - Several years back at a restaurant in Humble, a Red Lobster as I recall, we watched as one of the staff climbed up on the seat of a booth and then on the table itself to wipe off a light fixture. We pointed out to them that it was a bit unsanitary but they didn't seem concerned. Another pet peeve is when they use the same cloth to wipe off the seats and then the table. An then there are those who set their babies in diapers on the table.

Thank you for your effort and your success.

Cashiers handling money and then food directly has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time. I am pleased that you had a positive effect.

The staff at the Qdoba near us used to not wear gloves either. I'm sure there's a study somewhere stating that gloves makes no difference in the distribution of germs but it's tough to watch someone roll your burrito with bare hands. I sent an e-mail via their website and within a year they were all wearing gloves. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who complained so I'm not going to take credit.

One evening, a bunch of us were meeting at a Macaroni Grill for a birthday celebration. There was a snafu with reservations so we had to wait about 45 minutes. There's an area right up front with all the garnishes for the meals and I watched the maitre d flit between seating people, glad-handing guests, cleaning tables and, once again, using his bare hands to adorn meals with parsley, cheese, spices, etc. They really should keep that area behind closed doors unless they're going to go out of there way to practice good hygiene.

the last time I went to Subway (quite a while ago) the girl never took her clear gloves off. Into the cash drawer and right back to the food prep counter.

Her hands stayed nice and clean.

Yes, there are studies that show no difference between using and not using gloves. But that assumes the workers clean their hands after handling non-food items and duties. If they do not change the gloves, same problem. So it is more a case that gloves are sometimes used to maintain the appearance of sanitary practices, than any necessity to use them. A restuarant that maintains sanitary procedures will be good whether or not they use gloves. One that does not will do any better with gloves.

We have a House of Pizza here in town and the last time I went there I saw the owner out back slicing the vegetables on a large meat slicer with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. There was about an inch of ash just hanging on to the end of the butt. Aaaacckkkk!!!!! See ya!

I actually watch the employees at Subway and they do pretty good. I notice that, if they don't have anyone to exclusively man the cash register, they'll make several sandwiches and THEN ring them up in a row. Then they'll put on a fresh pair of gloves. YMMV.
