Yeah, it's a bloody photo bonanza over here lately. My photo friend who's letting me borrow his lens would like some advice as well. He's looking for recommendations for a flash bracket for a small body 35mm. He's considering this one http://reallyrightstuff.com/flash/04.html but would like some leads as well. Maybe anyone has personal experiences with the Stroboframe brand?
He's going to be using it with his 5D to shoot the wedding and engagement photos for the job we're doing. I'll also probably end up buying the whichever one he decides as well.

By the way, last night I became the proud buyer of a (like new) used 5D body for $1850 from a reputable eBay retailer and he's shipping it today. Good times...good times.

For pros, the RRS stuff is about the best. Stroboframe isn't in the same class (or price range).
The RRS stuff will last forever, but costs a bunch (as you know).

Same boat as your buddy. I am still just sticking my 430 on top for now.
FWIW....I have never seen anyone using the RRS bracket out in the wild. Stroboframe seems to be the weapon of choice for all the party / wedding guys who walk around and take pics. The only time I have seen anyone using an RRS is a studio. Why? I don't know.
I am actually looking for something 'almost' as sleek and tight to the body as the RRS is...but not as hulking as most of the Strobo frames I see.
Is there a 3rd option?
And your buddy wil L0VE the 5D...for a 2-1/2 year old design it can still shoot with the best of them (and some of them cost a LOT more than a 5D).

The RRS stuff is really used more by the big lens crowds, not so much wedding guys.
Kirk is another brand to look into.

Good stuff guys. Are there any particular models in any brand you guys particularly recommend? He's looking into Newton flash brackets. Any experience with those?

The quality will show in how smoothly the joints rotate. My older Stroboframe at work has seen a lot of use, and the joints are pretty smooth. Now I have no idea how smooth it was when it was new, or what space-age lubricants someone may have absconded with while assembling some secret project and used to lube up the photographers' gear.
(I did that once, about 7 years ago. $300 a tube....... Bad Idea.....)

Newton is definitely a good one, but not as refined as the RSS stuff, more crudely machined IMO.
You/he should visit the FM forums & ask/lurk with the wedding guys.
