Mixed feelings. People often don't value things that are free.
There should be assistance available for those who work for it.

On one hand I think it's a shame that some people who want higher education can't get it because they lack the financial backing. A smarter populous would result in more scientific and technological advancements.

On the other hand if everyone had a college degree what would happen to wages and the job market in general?

I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

In California, like other states, community colleges offer the same courses as four year universities for math, English, history, etc.

I wonder how the course drop statistics compare between the community colleges with their inexpensive tuitions and the four year schools with the much higher tuitions.

Many many kids don't even recognize that it's "possible" for them to even "go" to college. I didn't think it possible for me to go until I was in the middle of the 11th grade and an outreach student from UCLA took us on a trip across town to the campus and showed us around. I thought I was too stupid to go to college until then. I thought that was for people other than me. I got good grades too. We sat in on a gigantic math class that was studying Trig and so was I at Washington High. The college students were stumped by something the teacher was trying to express. I raised my hand and answered the question. From that moment on.... it was ON.

I was kind of in the same boat-- also didn't think I'd be able to afford college. A combination of dwindling grants and aid (Reagan's cuts were just being phased in), working full time during breaks, music scholarships, and state funded schools made it possible. My grades in high school were horrible-- barely graduated, at the bottom of my class, usually didn't even make it to school until lunchtime for band practice. I still have dreams now and then that I realize at the end of a semester that there's a class I completely forgot to go to.
The cost of college is probably what made me take it seriously. I had pretty much an A average off the bat, was amazed that I was suddenly magically above average scholastically, and upped my hours to 21 from the recommended 15 to get the most for my money.

Your sense of purpose kicked in. I think it would've kicked in no matter what. You obviously didn't like High School yet clearly your intelligence wasn't measured by any criteria that was relevant to your life and situation at that time.

I went a little earlier than you, because Reagan's cuts occurred just before my Junior year at Chico State. School itself wasn't as expensive as simply living was. I worked at restaurants and as a DJ, but I never could seem to make but about $150 dollars in a whole month and still go to school.

The first couple of years, I simply could not have gone without assistance. My family had no money and the $2.05 per hour I made at Taco Bell had to go to my mother.

a college education certainly isn't a right but it should be available to anyone who is willing to work hard for it.

that said, passed a certain point, education isn't worth subsidizing. its allowed the price of a college education to sky rocket.

I am in favor of subsidized -- and to a certain extent socialized -- higher education in the U.S.

I think that with the way the job market has changed in recent years, a 4 year college degree has been devalued and is the modern equivalent of what a high school diploma was 50 years ago.

...but to call anything a "right"... that's a tricky word. What do you mean by a "right?" Define it adequately and I'll answer your question succinctly.
