He made an illustration of one on an 8x11 sheet of paper and I swear, it was his best toy for a week.
We've Googled a few images. He now also has a picture book published by the Smithsonian, http://www.amazon.com/Volcanoes-Seymour-Simon/dp/0060877170/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1214449613&sr=1-1 (and there's a bunch more, I realize.)
Do you happen to know of a good DVD or a particular book? More red lava the better, of course.

Sounds like a GREAT excuse for a trip to Hawaii to me!
Or Yellowstone.. which is not QUITE as good, but hey, a geyser or boiling mud cauldron is pretty impressive too.

And Paul --- the "Hawaii volcanoes" are the only ones he mentions. I try to tell him of others, and about the concept of dormant volcanoes vs. active ones but all I hear is, "well, you know, volcanoes are in Hawaii and you don't want to get the hot lava on you ...
I never made one as a kid but I wonder if one of those volcano science projects , juiced by a battery and flowing "lava" etc. would be something he and I could do.

Baking soda and vinegar will give a nice volcano effect when embedded in caldera of mashed potatoes (cf. Close Encounters of the Third Kind). A bit of red and yellow food coloring will give a nice molten lava appearance...

One of my sons also went through a "volcano period" when he was small. He loved the Reading Rainbow episode about volcanoes, which shows Levar Burton visiting Hawaii during an eruption, and watched it repeatedly. But perhaps your son has already seen it and that's what sparked his interest...
