healthy lunches - beerman - 08-07-2008

I get sick of eating breakfast bars for lunch, what else could I keep in a drawer and eat that would be reasonably healthy for lunch?

how long in the drawer?

these would keep for several days

there are about 50 different bars at trader joes, not all are breakfast ones

These are really good:

You could take a "dry" spin on the bananas above, and get semi-sweet banana chips. Those are really yummy.

How about sesame sticks?

Or how about the Fruit & Nut Medley from Costco?

-any type of fruit (apples, peaches, nectarines, pears, whatever you like)
-rice cakes (lots of different flavors available)
-whole grain pretzels (whole wheat, oat bran, etc)
-homemade granola (low fat)
-nuts (almonds, etc)
-raisins
-prunes

those are a few ideas. now I'm hungry...

Can't keep in drawer but I like the peeled baby carrots and broccoli florets that come in bags at Trader Joe's, along with a couple spoons of their hummus. TJ's also sell these flatbread crackers that I have with this. Makes a pretty virtuous lunch, and I find that if I nibble at this for awhile it keeps me from getting hungry again for longer than if I eat something that takes 2 minutes to consume.

I would starve to death without TJ's.

I've got crackers (unsalted tops) and peanut butter at my desk for those days when I can't manage to bring something in. I also have canned soup but I'll probably have to give that away since I'm on a limited diet these days (and the Progresso soups have too much sodium anyway). I usually had an apple handy but am currently substituting the small containers of applesauce.

Nature's Path makes a cereal called Flax Plus that's a really good, crunchy snack.

Sounds terrible, but it has a sweet taste but without all the added sugar. I eat it when I get a craving for chips or something crunchy.

I measured serving sizes into little plastic bags, and took blueberries in another bag. I also packaged 4 oz servings of deli turkey and kept it in a cooler lunchbag.

A lot of people like granola, but a half cup of granola is 170 calories or so...lots of calories for just a little bit of snack.
