One symptom is that it will behave as if the RAM is not installed at all (empty slot).

Did you just install RAM into the machine in question?
If not, I don't see how RAM would unseat.
I could see if you had a stick of RAM go bad. That's happened to me before but once RAM is installed securely; I really don't see how it could pop out of its socket.

Nope - I didn't just install any ram - just was trying to troubleshoot something on my Mac.
