Best *Mac* Antivirus program? (just to keep from infecting PC's...) - Paul F. - 09-02-2008

Looking for a good Mac antivirus software...

There has been, I gathered, a bit of trouble with Mac users in another school district being "carriers" for PC virus-laden docments, and spreading them.

Personally, I just kinda smirk... but to be professional, I need to take pro-active measures here on a few computers.

Suggestions?

I know that Symantec has Mac products but they are not highly regarded. I user their enterprise products on my work network and I very much like it, but that doesn't mean that success would translate to Macs at all.

I think that F-Secure has an offering as well.

You can also put ClamAV on your mail server for free. That would keep things in or prevent them from getting out, but wouldn't address individual clients necessarily.

Sophos also has something if I recall correctly.

I found this article that may be old, but things on the AV front haven't changed much for Macs really:

are there specific viruses that are a problem?

or is this just suspicion that the viruses are coming from macs?

might be enough to turn off macros on Mac Office.

I was also wondering if there was anything specific or just suspicion?
When in doubt, blame it on the Macs!

No, it was confirmed that another schools macs were "forwarding" some viruses...And yes, mostly Word Macro viruses... but a few other things.

Some of it is people with infected PC"s bringing work in on flash drives...

Like I said, just looking to be a bit proactive.

ClamXav looks promising! I'm scanning my User folder now...

we deal with Word Macro virus cleaning on the Mac on an ongoing basis.

I had some worm on my Dull craptop at work that made it onto my MBP on a thumb drive probably, and it ended up on all my thumb drives. When I took them back to work, my Dull tower started to go crazy with warnings. Yeah, it CAN happen to us Mac users. We CAN be carriers. It is something we must accept and we owe it to everyone else to keep ourselves clean.

I cleaned up the MBP with ClamXav and all is fine. Full scans on a MDD with 4 200 gig drives sure took a LONG time.

ug, i can see how a pc virus can get on your pc formatted usb stick and be passed to the next pc but at no point was it reproduced on the mac.

anyone have proof of anything aside from a word macro virus being reproduced?
