firmware update question - Spiff - 09-03-2008

bought an iMac (20 inch - last of the whites) in mid (May) 2007. I'm having issues with USB headsets and decided to look for new firmware. Found this...

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237

Looks like my "mid 2007 purchase" iMac has "end 2006" iMac (20 inch) firmware. Confirmed it by looking at the system preferences. I am a little concerned how apple breaks up the iMac classification by mid and late and such. It's all very vague and potentially confusing.

I'd like to try to install the mid 2007 purchase firmware onto the iMac. Can I hurt the iMac by trying to install potentially "wrong" firmware? Will the computer let me install (accidentally) "wrong" firmware? I just don't want to bugger up a perfectly fine running computer except for a USB issue under windows.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Yes you can seriously jack up your iMac by trying to install the wrong firmware.

Do not do this to your computer!

The various models are classified by when they were introduced, not when they are purchased.

The mid-2007 model is the first generation aluminium iMac.

The last of the white models would be a "late 2006."

Ahhhh! Thank you all. I'll sit tight and do nothing for now.
