Is a system update the only way to update mail? - thermarest - 09-16-2008
I was all set to install 10.5.5 when I noticed it was going to take 1.9GB on my HD. Seems like a lot of space, especially given that the only problem I'm having with 10.5.2 is that Mail is unstable when dealing with several photo attachments at once. This was reported fixed in the release notes for 10.5.3. Is there a way to update only Mail?

there's no easy way that I know of.
Other than the space issues you mention, is there any other reason you'd like to avoid getting all the other bug fixes, improvements, and security updates that would be a part of that update? For me, the benefits almost always outweigh any potential risks and I've not ever experienced any malfeasance after installing an OS update.

I got that same 1.9G message, but I didn't lose anywhere near that space when I updated to .5.
I think that may be just the needed "working" room for the updater.

Good to know. I guess I'll just do it. The only issue was really the disk space and that I hadn't noticed any other problems, but maybe 10.5.5 will fix things I didn't know were broken.

For some reason, I ended up with an extra GB of drive space after the update.
I haven't found anything missing so far.

That space is occupied by older stuff that will be replaced, for the most part.
