Boss wants me to work from his house - Bosco - 09-16-2008 I've worked at a small office for the past nine years. Just me, my boss, and a person working the front desk. I'm a designer. My boss handles all sales. Anyway, I recently came to work and noticed a 'For Rent' sign in the front window of our office. It turns out that my boss has decided not to renew the lease. He wants to run the business from his house to save on costs. He wants me to work from his house. I'm thinking two things: 1. Get a new job 2. Convince my boss to let me work from MY home office (telecommute). Any ideas on how to convince him to allow me to telecommute? ...or, better yet, what would you do in this situation? Re: Boss wants me to work from his house - kap - 09-16-2008 Your gender? I don't know/can't keep track of the gender of everyone here on the forum. Re: Boss wants me to work from his house - Bosco - 09-16-2008 I'm male. 38 years old. Married with kids. My boss is male 60 years old. Pain in the ass. Re: Boss wants me to work from his house - kap - 09-16-2008 Since he's a PIA, I'd try 2 then 1. Re: Boss wants me to work from his house - 3d - 09-16-2008 [quote kap]Your gender? Since he's on a money-saving tear, perhaps some subtle hints about how you'd be paying for your own office furniture and such might be of help. Unless he has a huge house with lots of extra space, I would guess he will tire quickly of having 2 employees working in his 'home space.' Also, since he's looking at saving costs, if it would work for you (do you have the ability to pick up outside work?), maybe now is the time to look at working for him on a contractor/retainer basis. Re: Boss wants me to work from his house - mattkime - 09-16-2008 Sometimes it works well and sometimes it doesn't. depends upon how professional your boss is. Re: Boss wants me to work from his house - Mike Sellers - 09-16-2008 I've worked for clients out of their home office with no problems. Obviously, your boss is a PITA now, so working from his home won't really make any difference there, right? Do you have a lot of interaction during the day on projects? If so, it seems to make sense to still work in the same space. Will this be a longer commute for you? Cost more in gas? Re: Boss wants me to work from his house - Bosco - 09-16-2008 John, that is an option. I could offer him to work on a freelance basis and pick up outside work from other clients. I've thought about that and it does look enticing. However, he can be a little much of a control freak... So, I'm not sure he will like that idea of me sharing my time with other clients. I'm starting a list of things that would be beneficial for me to telecommute. I'll submit them to him as we start to get closer to the end of the lease. BTW: He does have a large house. However, I can't see myself working there because of distractions and lack of creative environment. |
