... as I understand it, a subpoena is a legal notice to appear, and cannot be refused.

Here is the important paragraph:
Witnesses who refuse to testify can be found in contempt under Alaska law. But the full Legislature must be in session, which won't happen until January. That means witnesses can stonewall without penalty beyond the Nov. 4 election, lawmakers said.

So in other words, we have to wait until this person is elected, in order to find out if her husband has been participating in a serious abuse of power in the governmental position from which she is primarily basing her qualifications to be elected. Does that about sum it up?

The rule of law is, apparently, in abeyance; refusing a subpoena is the latest craze. Just ask Rove and Miers.

I agree. If I'm ever in a position where my family members are being chased by political opponents with subpoenas, I'll instruct them to ignore legal advice and instead accept them, and say "thank you sir, may I have another!"

guitarist, I think my new response to any legal request I don't want to fulfill will be "I refuse!" Let's see how far that gets me.

Apparently, any Republican in the good graces of the White House can do anything he or she wants without consequence anywhere in this nation.
"Executive privilege." Bush's version of the reality distortion field. So long as they're not caught playing footsies with a cop in a bathroom stall, they're free and clear.

Unless they have a cop fetish. Then it's a different story. Though, with a plainclothes cop, it sorta blows the whole uniform thing.
