"All Things Must Pass" - Wall of Sound helps or hurts? - Dennis S - 10-02-2008 I'm listening to it after 35 years and it sounds good, but maybe for sentimental reasons. Reckon it would have been better without the Wall of Sound? Re: "All Things Must Pass" - Wall of Sound helps or hurts? - Yoyodyne ArtWorks - 10-02-2008 George Harrison included a bare-bones demo of "Beware of Darkness" on the reissue of ATMP and it sounds much better than the Spectorized original. I strongly suggest you get the "Concert for George" DVD and hear some of the ATMP songs with less overblown arrangements. Truly magical....I've said it before, this DVD is perhaps the best musical performance I have ever seen, in terms of musicianship and feeling. Re: "All Things Must Pass" - Wall of Sound helps or hurts? - WHiiP - 10-02-2008 Depends on the "rig" that you are listening on . . . A 35 year old vinyl album would still sound great on a good sound set-up. Or, do you have the original CDs that were a piece of crap as far as the listening experience goes? Fortunately, the CDs were remastered in 2001 and sound superb (for CDs :whine: ) Overall, a very strong effort from George. Re: "All Things Must Pass" - Wall of Sound helps or hurts? - papercup - 10-02-2008 A similar comparison, Let It Be...Naked does not sound better without "the wall". Spector knew what he was doing, mostly masking thin and/or sloppy studio playing. Re: "All Things Must Pass" - Wall of Sound helps or hurts? - Yoyodyne ArtWorks - 10-02-2008 I wouldn't say that "All Things Must Pass" and "Let It Be" were similar in terms of Spector's influence/involvement. Let It Be was a disaster from a musical perspective, the Beatles were sick of it and (with the exception of McCartney) didn't much care what Spector did to it. The musicianship on ATMP was significantly better, and Harrison himself expressed some doubts about the Spector influence in the liner notes of the ATMP CD re-release in 2001. Spector knew what he was doing, mostly masking thin and/or sloppy studio playing. Can't agree with that. I loathe what Spector did to that album. And I don't think the "wall of sound" has worn well in general. I wish Harrison had done ATMP without him. Re: "All Things Must Pass" - Wall of Sound helps or hurts? - incognegro - 10-02-2008 try the Glyn Johns versions of Get Back, if you can locate them. http://www.bootlegzone.com/album.php?name=PCS7080-2§ion=1 Re: "All Things Must Pass" - Wall of Sound helps or hurts? - Don Kiyoti - 10-02-2008 I have the remastered ATMP and I like Spector's production very much. What he said...and then some. Re: "All Things Must Pass" - Wall of Sound helps or hurts? - Yoyodyne ArtWorks - 10-02-2008 To hear how truly brilliant Harrison was as a composer, listen to Eric Clapton's arrangements of George's songs on "Concert for George." The striking melodies, unusual time signatures...Eric brings the full glory of "Beware of Darkness" to life. I wish Clapton had sung "All Things Must Pass" for the actual concert, the rehearsal video shows Eric's vocals were far more powerful than McCartney's. |
