How to transfer data between... - PeterB - 03-05-2006

an iMac 333 and an iMac 500?

I would have thought Firewire target disk mode, but the iMac 333 doesn't have Firewire... it does have wireless via a USB adapter, but the iMac 500 doesn't. (I could always temporarily stick an Airport card in the 500, but I don't have the weirdo adapter.)

Another problem: this particular 500, its built-in Ethernet is busted, so I am using a USB-Ethernet adapter to get the Ethernet. So though I would have normally thought to use Ethernet, USB might actually be faster... even though it's only USB1.1 on both ends.

What time did the T leave Porter Square in this story problem and was it the Red Line ...

USB Burner ?

'fil, yes, that will do for smaller amounts of data.

It occurs to me that since I'm essentially swapping one machine for the other (it's my bro's machine), I might just get the hard drive out of the 333 and then hook it up to the 500 via either Firewire or USB (I have one of those IDE-USB2 adapters, but unfortunately the iMac 500's USB is only USB1.1). I could also take the drive and stick it into his CD-R's drive's enclosure, which IIRC, might be both Firewire and USB (but it might be USB only)...

Good reason to have a FW/USB box around

I have an old ugly 5" case I pulled the drive out of to put in a rebuild G4
(it was a slowish 16X CD RW ) and kept the junky case bottom and board
that I use as an open faced drive juggler (FW/USB)

'fil, yeah, I don't have any spare enclosures... they always seem to go bad on me (the Firewire part; the USB is almost always fine).

Sounds like a good excuse for a new one :-)

How about sticking the 333 drive in the QS and using it as
a target disk w/ the 500 to transfer ?

Jeezo, how about an Ethernet hub/switch?
Or even cheaper, a crossover cable?

I'm strictly a Green Line guy.

Re: How to transfer data between... - mattkime - 03-06-2006

either a cross over cable will do the job or the newer imac might automagically do the cross over for you.

Re: How to transfer data between... - PeterB - 03-06-2006

guys, crossover cable isn't going to be any faster than USB, since the 500's ethernet is through a USB-ethernet adapter... it will work, but just at USB speeds, and might even be slower than the USB because the bandwidth has to be piped through the adapter.

'fil, the QS is not in this location. But yes, I could just get a new enclosure...
