I am not US Citizen, I am legal permanent resident, thus I cannot vote for president (I think I may be able to vote for local election though). May I legally make a contribution to one of the candidates, or would I be breaking the law?

Yes, and this is edited to reflect the fact you already said you're a permanent resident. I missed that at first.
From the Federal Election Commission website:
Can non-US citizens contribute?
Foreign nationals are prohibited from making any contributions or expenditures in connection with any election in the U.S. Please note, however, that "green card" holders (i.e., individuals lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S.) are not considered foreign nationals and, as a result, may contribute. For additional information, consult our "Foreign Nationals" brochure.
