If I remember correctly from Social Studies class in 7 grade, they were/are a Muslim sect that believes in worship of God through song and dance. I think that 'whirling dervishes' are somehow related to sufism as well, but I'm not positive about that though. They're not a sect; they're more like an order (like monasteries, sort of). Sufism is the mystical, esoteric core of Islam. More later, got to run.
