Oh, please. James Dobson (a.k.a. That Bigot) strikes again - Gutenberg - 10-31-2008

Focus on the Family comes out with a "Letter from 2012," with its scarifying description of four years with Obama as president and a "liberal Supreme Court." Hah. If only.

This is based on the premise that as soon as a Democrat is elected, half the Supreme Court will retire.

But, with the recent exception of Sandra Day O'Connor, they usually hold on until they are on their death bed before giving up their seat, no matter who is president.

Might take longer than 2012 to significantly shift the court. Bill Clinton didn't manage to do it in eight years.

I think the next president is likely to get the chance to appoint at least 2 justices.

I think it would take at least 4 liberal appointments to rule that homosexuality should be taught in schools. Wink

It's likely the next president will be appointing to vacancies that will either hold the court balance where it is today (Obama) or radically shift it right (McCain).

I don't think McCain could shift it radically right unless he had a Republican Senate for approval. And he's not really a radically right kind of guy, despite what his campaign handlers have made him into.

And I think Obama will have a tough time shifting it radically left unless he his party has a strong majority in Congress, enough to keep the minority party from throwing monkey wrenches.

Remember that it is the moderates that hold the power in this election and by extension into the next presidency, and they aren't interested in radical right or left.

McCain doesn't have to go far right in replacing either Ginsberg or Powell, all he needs to do is to go center right and then everything changes.

Wow, did someone appoint Colin Powell to the supreme court while I wasn't looking?

Stevens morphed to Powell (I can't begin to guess why), I just need a fact checker.

I don't know what happened to Dobson, but he's really lost it. There was a time when he put out some pretty good stuff, believe it or not. kj.
