(CNN)— Former Reagan chief of staff Ken Duberstein told CNN's Fareed Zakaria this week he intends to vote for Democrat Barack Obama on Tuesday.

Two things can happen after the election: the moderates can fight the neocons for control of the GOP, or the moderates can join the Democratic party. Either way it's good for the Democrats. The neocons have badly overplayed their hand.

Either way it's good for the country. This has been a tough 8 years and we need good people who aren't right wing to help us out of it.

Al Gore was talking to a crowd in Florida today and he said eight years ago, the economy was at its strongest, the country had its largest surpluses in its history, and the nation was at peace. I thought, yeah, those were the days.

I think it's kind of ironic that the standard bearer of the Republican party during what seems to be its last gasp is John McCain, a man who -- just four years ago -- was rumored to have been strongly considered to be on the short list for the Dems' VP pick, and a gentleman who has never been shy about harshly criticizing the very factions and tactics of his party which now appear to be bringing them down.
I dare say, the McCain of 2000 and 2004 might have been tempted to endorse Obama, if he weren't the McCain of 2008.
