I wonder if this is grounds for appeal. Remember the juror in the Ted Stevens trial who had to rush to California because her father had died?

He didn't die.

She had tickets to the Breeders Cup.

An alternate replaced her. They're vetted just like regular jurors.

No grounds for appeal.

He got better.

They still should kick that juror's tail around Courthouse Square.

I doubt the verdict is in jeopardy since an alternate was seated. But the juror might be in some legal hot water herself.

The story on CNN's website had this additional info...

Hinnant, 52, brought a stack of handwritten notes with her to the court on Monday along with public defender A.J. Kramer, and told the judge that her father hadn't died and she was at the Breeders' Cup in Arcadia, California.

She apologized for lying, and then started a long rambling story about horses, which included references to horse breeding, the Breeders' Cup, drugs, President Ford's son Steven and her condo in Florida being bugged.

"I am thoroughly convinced you would not have been able to continue to deliberate," Sullivan interrupted.

you know, i kind of sympathize with her. she had bought plane tickets months ago. it's not like the courts reimburse you for loss in a case like this. sometimes the rules around jury duty just aren't fair.

Talk about the back-handed put down, I think the judge has it covered.

I kinda feel for her too, but she should have said a bit less about the horses and such (and I LOVE horses!).
