Someone tell me that weeks like this are rare please - ztirffritz - 11-26-2008
So far this week the dog has eaten my iPhone($400), a hard drive died in my computer($150) and now the monitor on same computer has died($400). All told this is going to cost me almost $1000 to get back to having nothing more than I had the previous week. It is a painful hit to my pocketbook. I do have keg of beer on tap though so that is something to feel happy about I guess.

I think Apple charges $250 for the "liquid damaged" iPhone replacement, and $150 will get you a 1.5TB drive if it's a desktop (DM had a Dell deal today). Not sure on the monitor, but you could wind up better off for maybe $650?

I've noticed that technical failures tend to come in little groupings (although I don't think you can count the dog).

I don't know about that. I've had a few months this year I thought I hit my limit.

This week I was diagnosed with a rare, uncurable cancer, Pseudomyxoma peritonei. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudomyxoma_peritonei
My life expectancy, based on how advanced it is, is maybe three years, and only if I have "cytoreductive" surgery—a 10+ hour marathon where they remove as much of my 'slimed' insides as possible: omentum, stomach, peritoneal linings, parts of insestines, colon. You get the idea. Then they would wash my abdominal cavity with hot chemo. A good scenerio is, if my body holds out, the prospect of four of these surgeries over a 10-year period. Four surgeries is about max (all the scarring prevents the body from healing and mending). Surviving the treatment is harsh. Surviving without treatment is, uh, highly likely.
From my perspective, losing $1000 of gadgets ain't so awful.

jeebus. All of the sudden my blinding pain and innability to walk seems rather insignificant. I am beyond sorry to hear that.
