Here, "sheer brilliance and determination" means "finding some software that makes this sort of thing easy."
Based on the info at http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/ (thanks, MacResourcerers!), I used the Windows version of unetbootin to create a bootable flash drive, using a Ubuntu 8.10 ISO image The rest is history.
"History" means "why isn't my WiFi showing up, when it did from the LiveCD and from the USB stick"?
Well, at least progress is being made!

I have been doing sleuthing info for Ubuntu install on my Wind and I did see a note on one of the Ubuntu forums about a WiFi fix. Good luck !

I checked, and WiFi wasn't actually available from USB. Meaning, the drivers weren't on the USB stick, and therefore weren't in the final install.

Often the drivers are installed seperately because of licensing issues.

I installed ubuntu on my EeePC 1000h & played around with it for a while. Everything worked except for bluetooth but an ubuntu update fixed that.
I've decided to stop trying to install OS X on it. I've got it loaded with everything I need & it's working fine, so I'm gonna leave it alone & let it be an XP machine.

I am running 8.04 on mine, and the wifi did load on the usb drive. Wonder why they changed it?
Yes, Ubuntu does make you appreciate OS X! (C'mon Apple with the netbook, plz)
