When do you need DV Out? - Mac1337 - 12-04-2008
On a camcorder I am looking at, it has this DV Out port in addition to the usual A/V port. When do you need DV Out?

you'll need it if you want to get your video footage onto a computer for editing in imovie or Final Cut (or any other editing program.

So I can use the camcorder as a digitizer to convert old VHS tapes. I had a ZR100 that had a pass-thru mode. I wonder if they are the same thing.

Look carefully. Is it a FireWire port? A USB port? A proprietary port that needs a special adapter or only connects between certain devices?
Each one will have certain advantages and disadvantages, for example, FireWire is probably the most useful and reliable, but USB is the most prevalent.

Analog pass-through is a different thing than DV Out. Practically all camcorders since Digital8 or Mini DV will have the DV Out port I think, but not all will do analog pass-through for your conversions.
