Dead airport extreme card in powerbook? - Stephanie - 12-08-2008 Is it fairly common for airport cards to die? Last year, I gave my parents my old powerbook (1 ghz, 17", aluminum) & this weekend, they've reported that the airport extreme card in it has died. I have no other details but I am curious as to how common this is. Obviously they're not able to get wireless internet on it - if it's not the airport card, what else could it be (motherboard, etc)? Thanks Re: Dead airport extreme card in powerbook? - StingMe - 12-08-2008 Reseat the card? Re: Dead airport extreme card in powerbook? - Stephanie - 12-08-2008 StingMe - I suggested the same thing to my dad. I just got an email from him and he says (regarding the problem): "While we were surfing the net it simply said there was some sort of system error and the computer needed to be restarted." I wonder if a software update could have hosed things - but he says that there hadn't been any updates immediately before this happened. Re: Dead airport extreme card in powerbook? - StingMe - 12-08-2008 That's a kernel panic...no new hardware or software was added to the system recently? Any 3rd party RAM installed? Run AHT. Make sure RAM and airport card are seated properly, then zap the PRAM (and/or reset the NVRAM). You could also reset the PMU, though that may not be called for. Re: Dead airport extreme card in powerbook? - Stephanie - 12-09-2008 Thanks again, StingMe. Nope, no new 3rd party RAM (same RAM for years and years) & no new hardware or software. I'll suggest AHT & zapping PRAM. |
