you just can't beat the dynamic duo of George Peppard and jan Michael Vincent.

When I was a kid I was mightily impressed by A Crack in the World from 1965. Basically human experimenting causes an unstoppable crack which splits the Earth in two. The last shot is good for a laugh: love-bird scientist couple standing on a chunk of Earth which is flying off into space. They look down and a little bunny rabbit emerges from his burrow to see what's going on.

Apocalyptic:
War of the Worlds
When Worlds Collide

Post-apocalyptic:
Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome
Planet of the Apes

Near-miss:
Blast From The Past

A book (that may someday be a movie) that gave me a chewy perspective on history yet to be:
A Canticle for Liebowitz

Does the end of the universe count?

I'm with undr

a Boy and his Dog was such an incredible classic, starring a young.. Don Johnson (yes, he worked before Miami Vice). Good story by Harry Harrison.

And I loved Damnation Alley as well. Although the soundtrack really needed Bob Seeger's "Turn the Page". And the book was much, much better.

Voodoo, yes, 42 and all that, but the film really murdered the book. Of course, as Paul Simon sang "..never match my sweet imagination..".

The 27th Day w/ Gene Barry (1957, I think).

A sleeper. 5 representatives from 5 countries including the superpowers are given capsules that can eradicate all human life if they so choose. The plot revolves around what they do or don't choose and why. No real over-the-top special effects, just a great story.

...and it came out smack dab in the middle of the cold war.

...

A Boy and His Dog was by Harlan Ellison.

Harry Harrison wrote The Stainless Steel Rat series.

and, yes, I had forgotten ABaHD (33 years...where does the time go?)
