Macbook Pro MagSafe Question: Old or New? - anonymouse1 - 12-09-2008

I need to buy a power adapter for a Macbook Pro, and would appreciate it if you can confirm or refute the following:

The earlier version of the MagSafe power adapter for the MBP could be used for either the MBP or the MB, was physically larger, but was more prone to mechanical and/or electronic failure. The later version is smaller, can only power the MBP, not the MB, and is more reliable.

Have I got that right?

My experience is that there are two types.

The MacBook one is smaller and has lighter weight cable.

The MacBook Pro one is a bit larger, has heavier weight cable.

The MacBook one can't really supply enough current to run the MacBook Pro.

I'm on my third MacBook power supply, due to failures.

I've bough a MacBook Pro one this time and I think it is sturdier.

Apple has a replacement program for the failed adapters

Either version of the MBP power adapter will also work with the MB.

The redesigned MBP adapter looks similar to the MB's, although it is 85W (like its predecessor) rather than 60W for the MB version.

There is no reason whatsoever to get the older, larger MBP version.
