this will mark the beginning of "The Distancing" - back to McCain being McCain and the ability to speak his mind. It has to be rather freeing, even better than winning in a way.

Maybe if we respected McCain as a REPUBLICAN we would, but he left most conservatives and Republicans behind by giving up Republican beliefs and crossing the aisle too many times. I guess I feel about him as most Democrats do about Joe Leiberman. In fact, I like Joe better than McCain in that regard.

You have it backwards. McCain the legendary Maverick died with the South Carolina primary defeat by Rove & Co. back in 2000. But that's not the McCain you like. Since then he amassed a sizable Senate record voting the Bush Way, which normally it would seem you'd prefer.
