Liberals vs. Conseratives - Greg the dogsitter - 12-19-2008

This thread about eHarmony showed up on the other side of the forum a while ago, and I think it best exemplifies what Conservative vs. Liberal arguments ought to be.

On the one hand, we had the rights of people to be treated equally in society.

On the other hand, we have the rights of a business to run itself the way it wants.

I'd consider the first argument to be more liberal, while the second to be more conservative.

Both sides argued their own perspectives, without dismissing the opposition.

I would hope more conversations here could be run in such fashion, without assertions about others' motivations or character, or about what people like you must like because you hold yourself out as having a particular political leaning.

The conservative=Republican=NeoCon and liberals=Democrat=Terrorist bullshot really ought to stop.

You might disagree with me.

Which, of course, would mean you're wrong. :-)

Thanks,

GtDS

Oh. Well, that makes sense. :-)

I actually think the conservative argument was more that there _was no_ unequal treatment involved in the operation of eHarmony. Isn't everyone in favor of fair treatment of people?

And as a proponent of hate-filled conservatism, I would like to see more character assassination and bigotry on this side. kj.

Re: Liberals vs. Conseratives - Greg the dogsitter - 12-19-2008

Well, I was trying to portray both sides as arguing with the best interests of people in mind. The more conservative view places the rights of the business-owning human being, first. The liberal view places the social rights of a given demographic first. I don't mean that one doesn't care about the other's position; just that one's priorities depend on one's political/social/cultural views. There were no bad views in the discussion, just viewpoints from different backgrounds.

Re: Liberals vs. Conseratives - kj - 12-19-2008

I actually don't understand what makes that discussion any different than the bulk of what goes on here. Especially since at the end of the thread, someone accuses the other of bigotry. On one hand, everyone could just state their opinion without referencing anyone else. On the other, when people acknowledge other people, sometimes it gets _personal_. I'm not sure that can be avoided. I'm not even sure it should be. Conflict doesn't have to be bad, as long as people aren't malicious. I can't think of any time I've seen people post anything here where they were trying to hurt someone. kj.

isn't that how we know its time to move on?
