How do I re-point a computer to a Time Machine backup? - Greg the dogsitter - 01-13-2009

My Google-fu is weak this evening.

My Mac seems to have forgotten about the existing TM backups on an external drive. It seems to think that the backup folder is unrelated to the current system state, and thus tells me that there are only 6 GB available.

How can I tell TM that the backup on that drive is the current system's backup?

Thanks very much,

GtDS

Smack it on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper.

Time Machine Preference Pane. You can choose the drive to be used for backup by TM.

Did you look in TM Help???????

The computer sees the remaining 6.8 GB as the only available space on that drive. TM doesn't realize that the other files are simply old backups, from which it can now start to delete the older files.

Kicking off a TM backup results in a "You don't have enough space here, buddy" sort of message.

Fixed!

I was mis-interpreting the cause of the error message.

TM knew this was the correct drive, but was trying to dump the new 1 TB drive into the backup. Removed that via the Options thingee, and all is well.

Thanks!

I've made that mistake before, when I've added new drives to my setup.

You solved your own problem! What a good, good boy!!! :-)

There is no shame in licking your lunch container clean.
