Fast Download Times, Slow Page Loading - KALE - 01-24-2009
In another one that will probably go into the x-files, I thought I'd see what anyone knows anything about this problem. As you can see, I'm getting pretty decent download times, yet on my new Macbook Pro 2.4GHz pages take their sweet time to load on Safari (and Firefox).
To make matters worse, it's not all pages. Certain pages in Yahoo blaze in, but others (just enough pages to cause someone to notice it) crawl in. I also notice that I can't play a Quicktime HD (720) trailer in real time, which my download speed suggests I should be able to do.
My service provider is Earthlink Cable going through Time Warner. I should state that I've already tried OpenDNS and it only caused more problems.

Are you using a wireless router?
Have you connected your MacBook Pro to the router via ethernet?

Yes to both. I'm using an Airport Extreme (just got it yesterday) and I have connected my Powerbook via ethernet. For the first day it would only allow internet access via ethernet - nothing wireless. Today, at the advice of some guys at a local authorized Mac repair shop, I zapped my PRAM and cleared the OpenDNS. My Mac finally jumped online. But it's still way too slow and these is definitely a difference in the real world performance between the ethernet performance and the wireless performance, even though they show the same d/l speeds.

is that ethernet to the airport or ethernet to the cable/dsl modem?

Good question. Sorry I wasn't clear. I thought you were asking whether I had had any success connecting via ethernet, and I have from the airport (with the cable modem going into the airport, and the airport connecting to the mac by eithernet).

Do you have the same problems when connecting directly to the cable modem via Ethernet?
In other words, take the router out of the equation and let's see if it's your computer at fault.
(Leave the cable modem unplugged for a few minutes when you change the device you've got connected to it via Ethernet.)

Direct connection to cable is faster. Satisfactorily fast.
Connection through Airport Extreme through ethernet is fast too. Not nearly as much page stalling.
The page loading issue comes into play when its wireless.

See if interference robustness is enabled on the router. If so, disable it. If not, enable it.

i'm curious if something is interfering with your wireless signal as well.
give istumbler a spin to see if you're interfering with another network.
