Interesting evening - ztirffritz - 01-25-2009

I just had an interesting evening. I went to a wedding in Portland at Kell's Irish pub. It was a great evening until we tried to leave. There shots fired and several people were rumored to be dead. The wedding party was trapped upstairs as the police surrounded the area. The kitchen staff came n the back door via the fire escape and told us that at least one person was dead. We locked the doors and waited for the police. They eventually let us out but I still don't know what the heck happened.

I was born in the original Portland. I don't recall those sort of post wedding activities occurring at least not regularly.

Glad you're safe. You need to haunt a better class gin mill!

Woa. Glad you're OK!

Quite something for someone to remember about their wedding.

Irish weddings are rough!

2 dead, seven injured. The shooting actually started in the line for an underage nightclub and moved down the street to Kell's. The staff at Kell's was VERY professional and organized. They immediately acted to isolate the guests and secured the building. I used my wife's school keys to lock the back door so that no one could get in - it's just a hex key. We had a momentary fright when someone started pounding on the back door, but it was one of the cops. They took names and contact info. The shooter apparently shot himself. The wedding guests were mostly from out of town and their cars were trapped inside a crime scene, so they had to take cabs, or walk to their hotels when we were finally allowed to leave. My wife and I parked a few blocks away in a garage.

I live in a Portland suburb, and don't feel uncomfortable going into downtown Portland.

Anyway, I searched the Sunday Oregonian newspaper to see if details about the shooting were in the paper. On page A3 was an article about 2 people killed and 7 hurt Saturday night in a shooting at a wake in Wichita, Kansas. And on the same page was an article about two people killed and seven injured in an assault rifle shooting in Miami on Friday night.

That was really weird !!!!!

I generally think of Portland as being a safe place. They have lots of homeless people and a substantial drug culture, but generally they are peaceful. My wife and I come to Portland 1 weekend every few months to shop and experience some high-society culture. This seems to be a completely random shooting, which makes it even more difficult to process. Our brains want to find/create order out of chaos, but there is no order here. It just happened because it happened. The manager of Kell's was one of the victims. He/she took a bullet to the gut just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
