any chance that a 12.5mm drive will fit into an ibook g4? - hal - 02-08-2009 My newly acquired ibook g4 800mhz's hard drive is dying and I need to replace. I have a 30GB 5400 rpm drive, but it's 12.5mm. I also have 2 20gb 4200 drives in firewire cases that I'd rather not destroy... any chance it fits? Re: any chance that a 12.5mm drive will fit into an ibook g4? - JoeH - 02-08-2009 I am pretty certain the maximum thickness is 9 mm, maybe 9.5. 12.5 is definitely out. Re: any chance that a 12.5mm drive will fit into an ibook g4? - hal - 02-08-2009 Who wants to take one of these apart anyway? Think I'll use the 30gb as an external boot drive until something better (and real cheap) comes along... Re: any chance that a 12.5mm drive will fit into an ibook g4? - Wailer - 02-09-2009 After watching a lot of video and reading horror stories about extra screws and not being able to get the casing flush, I was very unmotivated to upgrade my g4 ibook drive. So I watched prices of 120gb 5400 3.5" drives drop from $300 to $70 over the course of 2 years and just grin and beared the stock 4200rpm 30gb drive. Just when I was ready to buy one and attempt the upgrade, I saw the light and bought a new 2.4ghz macbook w/160gb drive, DL superdrive, etc ($900). I glad I never opened my ibook. No chance. - RAMd®d - 02-09-2009 There are larger, faster, properly size HDs out there. ZipZoomFly has a 320/7200/16MB HD that will fit for $80, $60+ after rebate (though rebates maybe somewhat questionable these days). *IF* you're going to take an iBook apart, you may as well make it worthwhile. Me, I have a 12" PB that I really like and even though I have a 2.2GHz MB, I want to replace the HD with the above mentioned one. Did I mention I really like that PB? |
