ATT DSL Elite Plan...only getting about 5100kbps - pinkoos - 02-12-2009
We've had it with Comcast going down all the time (cable internet, not cable TV), so are in the process of making the switch to ATT DSL Elite ($35/month).
Set it up last night, put filters on all the phone lines...had to buy an alarm filter from Radioshack for $20 for our alarm box phone line.
Tested everything and it works, though we're only getting around 5100kbps download and anywhere between 350 and 650kbps upload. The Elite plan says that d/l is 6000kbps and u/l is 768kbps.
A call to ATT broadband tech reveals that although the Elite plan is advertised as 6000, one usually only gets around 5100 to 5200.
Does this sound right to you guys?
As an aside, when our Comcast cable internet is working, we get easily over 6200kbps d/l and around 900kbps u/l.

Actual speed may vary... lots of variables come into play with DSL with the 2 biggies being, what kind of shape are your copper lines in and how far are you physically from the local CO.

That's about what I get with AT&T. And I've been told that's pretty good.

Part of the difference is the PPPoE and ATM protocols used on most DSL connections. The PPPoE protocol overhead uses about 0.5% of the total bandwidth capacity, while the ATM overhead is about 9.4%. That uses up part of the 6000 Kbps provided on the link. Also, there is a settling period for most DSL modems as they self-configure to get the best use of the connection based on the noise and frequency response of the circuit. That can take a few days to settle down.

The distance from the telco Central Office--or the distance to a satellite Remote Terminal closer to you--is the key variable to dsl speed. You can find your CO here (but this does not list Remote Terminals):

The apps that used to specify how far away you are seem to be disabled (?), and I am not sure why.
Cable uses a completely different technology to provide connectivity so the comparison will not be useful.
Getting 5mbs down is not too bad for dsl. And the good news is that you should get that bandwidth quite consistently.....
dsl's problem is that the roadmap for bandwidth increases is not as good as cable or fiber. AT&T has made a decision not to go with fiber to the home.

With network overhead and not knowing your distance from the CO, 5100 sounds about right.
Is ADSL2+ available in your area? That goes up to 18Mbps down and 1Mbps up, if you're lucky enough to live close enough to a CO that offers it, and can find an ISP that'll sell it to you. Covad seems to be the biggest player here for the moment.
Yesterday I got my ADSL2+ installed, since Sonic.net just started offering it in San Francisco. I only qualify for 6000/1000, so it doesn't seem like a huge upgrade over my 6000/768 ADSL service, but I'm now getting 4900/800 in real life as opposed to about 4000/400 with the old ADSL. My VNC sessions over an encrypted VPN connection really fly now!

I had Elite installed last month. I get between 5.1 and 5.8 regularly. I had Comcast 6meg service. I do not notice any difference in the real world. When you do a speed test the cable is way faster but in actual use I do not see much difference.
I do find it faster for uploads of files. Check your modem and see what speeds the CO has set for you.

I was told by AT&T that their U-Verse product uses fiber to the home in order to provide greater speed.
