How to clean dog poop that's on little stones? - Greg - 03-09-2009
So, we've got some little stones laid down in an area of the yard where grass doesn't grow.
Naturally, there's now dog poop on the stones.
Poop-scooping isn't a great idea, because everything sticks together, you see. I don't want to throw the stones away.
What about blasting everything with a hose? Poop breaks apart, falls between stones, um...is that a good idea?

Do you mean little stones like gravel spread around, or little stones like paving stones but small ones?

pea gravel or small river stones 1-2"?Wash with power hose unless you want to sit and pick out each piece of sprayed poop.

Little like pea gravel, or little like 1.5" river rock?
Usually I do one of two things.
1) give it a day to dry out, it will unstick from the stones.
2) hose down what sticks to the stones. Shouldn't be much of a problem smell wise if that's your concern.
Every once in a while, I get enzymatic stuff from the tack store. Comes in a half gallon sized jug that's diluted 1:8 with water. Dump that on the area every couple of days. It'll take care of any smell that lingers. Also works on dog pee smells. Don't get Nature's Miracle. I love the stuff but it's expensive. Better suited for indoor applications.
Lastly, why don't you want to throw the stones away? A ton of river rock costs $30-40. It would take you years and years before you got to the point where you'd have to start looking in to replacing them.

At the doggy park near here, which has pea gravel paths, they pick it up and then hose what's left behind. If you are talking about a dog who has eaten something he shouldn't have and is experiencing digestive discomfort then all bets are off--just get out the hose.
