Donationware - how much to give? - wolfcry911 - 03-20-2009

So you've downloaded some donationware and after some time realize that you use it frequently enough to donate to the developer(s). How much do you give? Later, you find a simple plug-in for the aforementioned software that is also donationware. You like and use the plugin just as much. You know it didn't take much to create (it's about 80 lines of code) but you couldn't have made it yourself. How much to give this author?

I've given $5, $10 and $20 bucks.

How difficult a problems does it solve? How elegant is the solution? How much do you rely upon it? How good do you feel about the author? How much cash have you got to spare?

I've given $10-$20. I know nothing about programming and code, so I can't really appreciate how easy or difficult something is to create, but l try to use the parameters Doc mentioned above.

Programs vs Lord of the Dance? About even. Smile

The length of the program is not a strong correlation to the amount of time and effort it takes to create it.

Generally, I look at what competing software (usually Shareware) is going for, take an average and donate that much. If it's unique, then I consider how much I'd use it and come up with a donation based on that.

The iTunes app store has established price examples for me.
