obligatory medical advice thread - wurm - 03-22-2009

Okay, so I'm a drinking lightweight. Last night my wife and I went over one of her friend's house. I had a glass of wine until I saw that they had some Jack Daniels, so had a glass o' Jack. Then another friend of theirs came over and he supposedly makes a great Cosmo, so I had one of them. During the course of the evening that was refilled, and this morning I'm feeling the effects. It's been a while...

Anyway, I'm trying to decide between acetaminophen and ibuprofen to take the edge off. Here's the rub. I already take daily meds for the ticker; aspirin, atenolol and Plavix. I know there are some pain relief products I should avoid, but I use them so infrequently that I've forgotten. I figure with all the medical experts here, someone will know the definitive answer. So what should I take?

don't mix drinks!

Usually you can also take acetaminophen along with aspirin. But not ibuprofen as I recall. But with the other medications you are taking, might be better to call a pharmacist or a doctor. No idea how the other meds there interact.

Have another drink.

Nothing like biting the dog that bit ya.

I think lots of water will help you feel better.

Yes, just call any pharmacy, and they will be glad to answer your question. I've done it a number of times, and they've always been glad to help. As a general rule, the acetaminophen would be the best choice, because the ibuprofen can act as a blood thinner, as does aspirin, which is why those two are not recommended in combination. Still, a call to a pharmacist regarding the interaction with the Plavix and atenolol is the best way to get an answer to your question. I mean, we're good, but there's a limit! Smile

Drink plenty of fluids to rehydrate yourself.

Piece of advice for next time - after drinking and BEFORE you go to bed, drink a lot of water. It'll really help prevent feeling icky the next morning.

On the rare occasions that I've gotten drunk, a glass or two of water has always prevented any after-effects.

If you feel rotten now, why not drink a glass or two of water & go back to bed for an hour? You might even wake up feeling better w/o having taken any meds.

Buy a Dell Mini 9 and you'll feel great in the morning. I promise.

Thanks, all. It's interesting to see the recommendations to call a pharmacist. I had called the 24 hour nurse hotline number just before posting this, just to see if they had any suggestions. Their suggestion was to call a pharmacist. Smile

Can't go back to bed now (or have another drink) because I'm at work until 10pm. Hopefully, I'll feel better before then. I don't feel miserable, just that little headache mostly. Guess it's time to call CVS. Thanks.

They don't call it in-TOXIC-ated for nothing.

Like Stephanie said, drink as much water as you can stand, then drink some more, and drink more every time you take a pee. Dehydration causes many of the classic hangover symptoms.
