Those jobs aren't coming back-Now he tells us - Mac1337 - 03-27-2009

On the heals of IBM layoffs, and sending some jobs to India, President Obama says those jobs aren't coming back. He doubles down and further says some of those jobs shouldn't come back. Well, I'll be darned. I think Romney said that first and got skewered for it.

Help: a company that makes condoms on the east coast is closing now their condoms will be made in CHINA...that has to be a real risk lovemaking adventure...China can't make safe toys or dog food....what happens with condoms. (300 jobs lost)

Anyone for Russian roulette?

Did anyone think that the exact same jobs that were lost would be recreated here? Maybe yes, to some degree, but by and large the message I got was that most of the jobs created would be in new areas. Some people will need to make a career change.

The exact same construction or cubicle job won't be waiting for most people when the economy finally turns around. It's going to be different jobs. If we lose 300 condom manufacturing jobs and gain 300 jobs related to alternative energy, I'd say that's a good trade.

However, I have no interest in trying Chinese condoms.

Depends on who is writing the specs and enforcing quality control. Remember, that Mac, iPod, or iPhone you buy is almost always made in China now. The Chinese manufacturers are quite capable of making quality products if contracted to do so and the contract is enforced.

As for the jobs, hopefully some high quality jobs will be created to replace them. Problem the last decade or so has been that many of the higher paying, high value added production jobs have been shipped overseas where they can pay a lot less, and replaced with low paying service jobs here.

My neighbor was let go by IBM. Despite record earning by her department. I don't see her job being able to be done by outsourcing to India. IBM sucks and we had better not be subsidizing them ....

Obama knew, and knows this is going to get a lot worse, and his own party has said these jobs are gone and will never come back. While he was giving high numbers of jobs that he will create, his party was and is playing that down.

You are making sense but that was not the message we heard during the election. We had this knight on a white horse who would descend and punish companies for sending jobs overseas. It was a staple of his campaign speeches. I knew full well at the time that there is nothing a president can do to stop companies from doing that but not one person questioned it. His tool supposedly was not give tax breaks to companies who ship jobs overseas. OK, where is the legislation? Instead, what we hear is a heartless, you-are-on-your-own Republican message.

Obama said in that national email thing last week when the question was asked "when will the lost to overseas jobs come back to the US"...he said Never and we don't want them. We want americans to get the high paying solar power panel jobs (then he named some other techinologies).....
