The thrill is gone... - richorlin - 04-05-2009

from my refurb Dell Mini 9. After two weeks, I find the screen too small and the keyboard too awkward. The build quality is not Apple's and although it's running Leopard, it's definitely not a mini-Macbook. Luckily I was able to sell it locally on Craigslist for more than I paid for it. It's nice, it's cute and I'll probably miss it, but it's a little too small for me.

Oh, if only the Mini 10 had a GMA 950 video chip...

You know I'm free, free now baby
I'm free from the Dell
I'm free, free now
I'm free from the Dell
And now that it's over
All I can do is wish you well

I find the screen perfectly usable. The keyboard is okay except for the apostrophe key placement.

It's a great little machine that is very popular in our house but to each their own.

I bought an Asus Eee PC 901 instead of a Dell mini. I didn't plan on running Leopard so there was no real loss to me. In fact I gained quite a bit from not buying the Dell mini 9:

  1. Bluetooth (standard)
  2. 802.11n
  3. 20GB SSD (may actually be two cards totaling 20GB, but hey)
  4. Good build quality (haven't had the Eee long enough, but the body feels rigid, hinges taught, ports allow cables to smoothly slide into place).
  5. Stereo speakers
  6. Standard 1.3 MP webcam
  7. Dual mics for better voice quality.
  8. 7.5 hour battery life with standard 6 cell battery.

All these options for $280 shipped from Amazon. The system was new. My $40 gift card balance helped seal the deal -- so $240 shipped for me. I'm quite impressed so far. There are some oddities to the Eee Xandros system versus something like OS X or Ubuntu, but I'm not horrified.

I do agree that the screen and keyboard are a little small on the 9" Atom systems.
