Brother tried to get prints made from a memory card @ WalMart - Grateful11 - 04-05-2009

My brother took his sons memory card into a nearby WalMart to get
prints made of his grandchildren and they told him they had to be
professional work that he was trying to copy, man did he get mad, his
son is a very highly paid Graphic Artist and Photographer. They wouldn't
sell him the prints. He took them somewhere else and they sold them to
him. He made them cut them up at WalMart, he said he wasn't leaving
them behind for someone to just take. My nephew is a very talented
artist and photographer.

No comprende.

I generally have to sign that I'm the copyright holder and show my business card (I'm a photographer) to get prints made at places like Wal-Mart or Walgreens.

congratulations - he must do very good work! this was a pain in the butt but Walmart did their job here. what if your brother was a client of your nephew trying to get prints done cheaply rather than paying your nephew for his work? the walmart clerk was looking out for your nephew's rights and no, they don't have to take your brother's word that they are family pictures.

Why would a a highly paid Graphics Artist/Photographer need to go to WalMart for prints?

I wish I had that problem. They tell me "and you want to PRINT THESE???" He must really be good.

Since when did Walmart become the copyright police? It's not their job to protect anyone. I think the clerk was overstepping his authority. The only time he has any say in what gets printed is if it's child-porn. Even then, all he can do is call the police.

if they spot you, even my local library will stop users from copying copyrighted material beyond use limits. perhaps liability has been extended to establishments in lawsuits. walmart has deep pockets - it wouldn't surprise me if there have been attempts to go after businesses with assets to tap.

The moral of the story, don't shop at Wal-Mart.

These are Walmart employees paid on the cheap, they are not copyright experts. They are only doing what they are told so they don't get fired.
