oh well, at least they get the additonal luggage allowance.

United gets strict on ‘seatmates of size’

Effective today, United Airlines has a new official policy that affects “seatmates of size” and those passengers seated near them.

The airline’s posted policy, quietly adopted earlier this year, states that if a passenger cannot fit into a single seat, buckle their seatbelt — even with a seatbelt extender — or put the seat’s armrest down, the airline will ask that passenger to pay for an extra seat or stay behind.

I don't see a problem with this. If you ship a 400 pound package, why shouldn't it cost more than a 200 pound package half the size?

Just wait until they reduce the seat so only size 0 teenage anorexics can fit 'em, and make us all pay for being fatties.

this is the kind of issue where i'm not sure where to draw the line. as a traveler, it can sometimes be uncomfortable to be seated next to an extremely large person. however, in the quest for sardine dollars, the airlines have reduced the size of the seat through the years. as cbelt3 suggests, how far will it go? who gets to determine what a 'normal' size person should be and how much room they need around their butt?

"who gets to determine what a 'normal' size person should be and how much room they need around their butt?"

Uh, you either fit in the box, or you don't? They decide the size of the box, and you decide if you want to get in it or not? Or if the box is too small, you buy 2 boxes? No paying passenger is ever forced to fly on a plane.

You could drive yourself, take a train, take a bus, take a boat, take another airline that may offer larger seats at a higher price. Lots of options.

The logistics might not be as convenient, but you still have choices.

and as I mentioned in a post in the last 2 days, my tickets to Mexico this year are half of what they were in 2008 and 2007. Hey, beats walking, and hundreds less per ticket. Heck the money saved pays for the rooms for the 2 weeks.

I have travelled extensively with a large person in the past. I am NOT unfamiliar with the issues. HOWEVER, my ex-wife KNEW that decisions like this are just business, and if she REALLY didn't like it, she could lose the weight, or not fly, or buy 2 tickets (she wasn't that big, but you get the idea)

I'm a big guy... (not to be confused with a big guy and rusty...)...
And I'm perfectly OK with this idea.

I only take up one seat, but I was too "wide" to fit in ONE seat, why SHOULDN'T I pay for another seat?

Re: A United Airlines version of 2 fer 1 - Racer X - 04-15-2009

heck, I would be OK with a weight allowance, say 400 pounds for you and your luggage. If you weigh 400 pounds, no luggage without excess fees. If you weigh 200 pounds, 200 pounds of bags, or maybe get some money back.

you are cargo with a heartbeat. Get over it and realize that.

I have no problem with this policy. Far too many times I have had people who take up 1 1/2 seats next to me for cross-country flights. People aren't FORCED to be obese; there is a simple solution - stop shoving food down your mouth.

there are some spider-legged basketball players that need two seats
or a seat with no seats in front of them

exercising isn't lifting a heavy fork repeatedly.

My ex decided that she was too fat. She started small, and did a sprint triathalon, eventually worked herself up to half iron man races, and double century 1 day bike races. Dropped a hundred pounds. I may not be married to her, but I am still proud of who she is, and what she has accomplished.
