If you load an unpaid for OS X install on your mini 9 - Racer X - 04-15-2009

God will kill these two, because of you

don't be a party to murderer. Just buy your OS please? Even though it is against the license agreement to do so, at least PAY for it and pretend to be honest.

And really, the 5 seat family pack is still cheaper than 2 singles.

If you're not going to pay for it, you might as well use Linux.

Ching, ching. That is what I did with my EeePC. For just surfing and webmail, there really isn't any difference. If I was going to do anything else, I would want X, but FireFox works just fine under Linux.

Hey, that's what I did as well. What Asus Eee PC do you have? I have a white 901 and it has been pretty fantastic. I use it for a little Google Docs, general web browsing, Skype, and listening to Podcasts. The default distro (Xandros) is pretty basic. I loathe the XP theme and that removable storage shows up as letters. D:, seriously? YUCK!!!

I'm thinking of trying the Ubuntu Netbook Remix instead. I'd like to install and boot from an SD card for testing, but not sure how well this will work. I have an 8GB class 6 SDHC card. I hope that will be speedy enough. Just waiting for Ubuntu 9.04 to be released so I can try the latest and greatest.

I have the low end Surf. It is running what it came with straight out of the box. It is great for travel, because it is so much lighter and smaller than an iBook or MacBook. The only thing that I find is not as user friendly is the way the WiFi connects. It works and all, but the AirPort interface is so much nicer. Still, for a fraction of the price of a MacBook, you have to give up something. If I had waited, I might have opted for a mini 9, but since this is just a traveling/ultra portable machine, it works fine for what it does. I had no desire whatsoever to have any version of Windows, even on a netbook.

I don't own a Dell Mini, nor do I advocate pirating OS X, but perhaps someone could explain to me how Apple or anyone else benefits if someone chooses not to install a pirated version of X and uses Linux instead???

Besides points on your conscience what is the benefit to anyone here????

Someone here is rationalizing.

And if you're going to rationalize, I can help you do even better.
For Apple, the profit is in the hardware. The OS is just the draw. If you are not going to buy the Apple hardware, and you ARE going to put the OS on the non-Apple hardware, just do it. No real harm to Apple.

All the people who say "at least pay for the OS" are just fooling themselves and rationalizing. Paid for or not, putting OS X on Dell hardware is against the EULA.

- You can do it and be happy with your Dell mini, but then don't go around judging others.
- Or, don't do it, use Apple hardware, and feel free to judge and preach all you want.

if piracy gets too bad with respect to Apple software, they will surely resort to some really invasive and PITA serialization and activation schemes. And rightly so.

Right now, nothing stops you from buying a single retail install disk and installing it on hundreds of machines. Or iLife and installing it on an entire families fleet of Macs. Nothing but your conscience, and how well your parents raised you.

Well, that and the wording on the EULA forbids installing the software on non-Apple hardware.

So how will Apple even KNOW if I:
1. Install OS X on my non existent Dell Mini
2. Legally acquired and own that copy

I agree, people should NOT be pirating OS X, but if it's that or not use it at all, I really don't see the difference or the harm done.....

Oh, just BTW has the netbooks craze caused a real spike in piracy or are these the same people who would likely be doing it anyway under different circumstances???
