MacDell Question For The Friendly People At MRF - Markintosh - 04-16-2009

Alright, with the taxes done, i can focus on cleanup on the MacDell. I know I can post at MyDellMiniForums, but the questions there are posted in a 68 page thread.

After the install and 10.5.6 update, my HD is littered with a bunch of system files that aren't all mormally there. Is this how it turned out for everyone else? What can I safely delete or move?

Ooh. Lots of stuff that does need to be there for OS X, but invisible. Do NOT delete anything until you learn more ...

There are GUI and command line ways to set an item's "invisible bit" if necessary. A quick Google revealed some outdated tutorials, so I won't post them here in case they're irrelevant for Leopard.

Anyone else?

Hmm...I don't see those on mine (which means they might be invisible).

I did a custom install off my 10.5.4 disk and it came out around 7.8 gigs. I then followed the thread on mydellmini for stripping it even further. I think when I finished it came in at 6.6 gigs. Here is a detailed discussion on eliminating uneeded files after install.

There is a mention on using terminal to get rid of unwanted files that aren't removed using the above applets...but not the ones you are listing...

See Section H in this discussion...

Monolingual (mentioned in the first link above) works great. Ran it on my Dell mini last night and it removed > 1GB of unneeded language files. This is even after telling Leopard NOT to install all the language support files. Just make sure you tell it to keep both English and American English (assuming you're in the US, and you don't ever need any other languages).
