Is it me or do ipod headphones sound better when top inserted into ear? - Wailer - 05-15-2009

When I push the top into my ear with the face/grill facing forward (the same direction I'm facing) the sound seems so much better. I'm not sure if it's because it's blocking out more of the background noise or because there is some sound coming out of the 5 little holes on the top. Or maybe this is how they are designed?

Anyone else listen this way?

That's the only way I keep them in my ears for more than 30 seconds before they fall out...

Every ear is different, and if it sounds better to you, go for it.

Yeah, pretty much what Mr645 said.

The ear canal is not really straight, and depending on the shape of your ear the way the headphone buds sit might actually be aiming directly at ear skin and not going into your ear canal. Whatever works and is comfortable for you- do.

When I push the top into my ear...

I'm trying to picture that. Does the cord portion stick out at about 90d?

Sony used to make a set of 'phones that were on a band with the buds (very similar to Apple's OEM buds) placed at the opening of the ear canal, 90d to it. That put them facing forward similar to how you're wearing yours.

Apple's basic earbuds suffer from not sitting at all well for a lot of people. These need to sit in a pocket at the opening to sound good. For me, they are very there stable so the sound is very consistent (and sound quite good contrary to what most say).

Move them around and the bass drops tremendously skewing the tonal balance. Other positions might limit the mid and high frequencies giving a less tinny sound that many people hate, especially those who like to crank up the bass.

I'm betting they sound better for *both* reasons-- there is sound coming from the top, and they are getting tighter coupling to your ears.

I got a pair of those in-ear headphones for this reason. They have the rubber cover part that fits better and gives a more complete seal, thus better sound.

I cut the centers out of a pair of Jabra Eargels & put those over the earbuds so that they'll stay in place.

BTW, I think Apple sells some pretty crappy earbuds & the fact they charge $30 for a new pair is downright criminal! My last working set of genuine Apple earbuds failed a couple of weeks ago in the same manner as all of those before. It started with a static sound in one side that eventually overwhelmed the music.

Exactly. I fits better but is more likely to pop out.

Ah, I can see why.

Apple's $80 earbuds have three different sized silicone tips to adjust the fit. They sound quite good and stay in place.

But most any half-way decent set of 'buds with silicone tips [insert joke here] will sound better than the OEM 'buds since they seal with most ears much better.

I've used the Griffen EarThumps which converted some models of Apple's 'buds to in-ear use, but they made the sound waaaaaay to bass-heavy for my tastes.
