. . .at least from GM. . .tentative deal to sell. . .

General Motors in tentative deal to sell Hummer

. . .General Motors Corp. said Tuesday that it has tentatively agreed to sell its Hummer brand, a day after the U.S. automaker filed for bankruptcy protection with hopes that it will transform its most profitable assets into a new company within just 30 days.

The Detroit-based company did not name the proposed buyer or the price, but said the sale will likely save more than 3,000 U.S. jobs in manufacturing, engineering and at various Hummer dealerships.

"We're not today in a position to be able to identify a buyer. it was part of the agreement," GM Chief Executive Fritz Henderson told CBS's "The Early Show." "We believe the buyer is quite capable of closing."

Critics had seized on the rugged but fuel-inefficient Hummer as a symbol of excess as GM's financial troubles grew and gas prices rose. Sales at Hummer, which is known for hulking sport utility vehicles like the H3, have been in a steep slide since gasoline prices rose to record heights last summer. For the first four months of this year, Hummer sales are down 67 percent.

GM and other automakers will report May auto sales later Tuesday.

A sale of the Hummer brand had been expected. Chief Executive Fritz Henderson had said in April that the automaker was expecting final bids from three potential buyers within the month.

Other terms of the transaction, which is currently tied to a memorandum of understanding, were not disclosed. . .

Why the secrecy about the buyer? Do you think a Chinese or Indian owner for an American brand such as Hummer would stir the pot?

I would be willing to bet a Cold Draft Beer that Tata Motors is the new Hummer owner! Any takers?

Why postpone the inevitable. If it has sold - who did you sell it too?

Several months ago NPR had a brief discussion, and it was noted that the Hummer brand's brute force engineering (ignoring the dumb bling and chrome they stuck on 'em) is very popular in developing nations with limited and non-existent infrastructures. Huge sections of the planet are very suitable for this vehicle, which was originally designed to go on almost any land on the planet - the classic Artic to Desert model.

I've never been to Africa, but my sister (who goes annually as part of a species survival project in Kenya) tells me that the Land Rover style SUV is a very popular vehicle. In Pakistan years ago it was the Mitsubishi Pajero and the Land Rover. A Hummer is a perfect vehicle for that environment, as long as the dumb stuff gets tossed. After all, the elephant that's chasing you isn't doing it so he can admire his tusks in your chrome bumper.

wouldn't that be the original H1 and H2s? The H3 is just a fuggly Suburban isn't it?

I just heard on CNBC that the proposed buyer is a Chinese machinery company.

http://www.cnbc.com/id/31065937

General Motors has reached a preliminary agreement for the sale of its Hummer brand of large sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks to a machinery company in western China with ambitions to become a carmaker, a person familiar with the Chinese government approval process said Tuesday.

The Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company Ltd., based in Chengdu, concluded the agreement with GM, said the person, who insisted on anonymity.

Sichuan Tengzhong is a privately owned company, but Tuesday’s deal required preliminary vetting by Beijing officials, who retain the right to veto any attempt at an overseas acquisition by a Chinese company and who give special attention to deals over $100 million.

The H3 is just a suburban with a hideously ugly body bolted on top. It is NOT an off-road vehicle. It is too heavy and too wide to be useful offroad.

Oh, shoot, I had heard that Hummers were going to go away entirely. Too bad.

Why do you hate America?

The H3 may not be a rock climber, but I'd rather have it off-road than a Jeep Liberty.

The H3 is based on the small Colorado pick-up chassis not a Suburban.

...rugged but fuel-inefficient Hummer...

I've always liked the looks of the Hummer and have known how fuel-inefficient is, but is (was) it truly rugged? It seems way too heavy for more vertically oriented travel, but I was wondering if it is really suited to off-road use.

Disclaimer: I do not hate America or bicyclists. I'm just curious about how adept the Hummer is off-road.
