A Few Extra Pounds Might Bring Extra Years

TUESDAY, June 23 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that being overweight -- but not obese -- might help you live longer.

In the study of more than 11,000 Canadian adults, overweight people lived longer than normal-weight people, while those who were either extremely obese or underweight died at an earlier age than normal-weight people...

The two things I see that stand out:

The findings do not mean that normal-weight people should try to pack on extra pounds, the researchers said.

and

But Kaplan noted that there's more to health than just living longer. "Our study only looked at mortality, not at quality of life," he pointed out, "and there are many negative health consequences associated with obesity, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes."

Admittedly, I'm overweight and could stand to lose about another 10 pounds--have lost 10 pounds so far, but I swear at least 60% of Cincinnati looks like this:

It isn't the fact that people are overweight, they are moribundly obese.

Maybe the recession might have a positive effect. Less money to eat or will people eat more fatty/carb based foods....?

Sucky study. BMI and even scale weight are terrible metrics. They should have used a dexascan and derived body compositions. You can be at or under ideal weight but be deficient enough in muscle mass that you're carrying around enough body fat to qualify as overweight. Similarly, you can be above your ideal weight and overweight by BMI standards, but carry low body fat. That study really is useless.
