A question for you Medicos who also might shop at Costco... - RAMd®d - 06-26-2009
I usually buy a bottle of 400 or 500 325mg Aspirin, the standard sized white tablets.
Recently, the local Costco was out, so I got a bottle of 500 325mg Asprin (NSAID). These were a little smaller and had an orange coating to be easier on the stomach. The label said Compare to... ecotrin"
I'm wondering, is this the same stuff as my previous aspirin?
I took a couple last night for a headache, and two this morning. But I noticed that I got a little off balance if I moved my upper body. If I stood up after tying my shoes or if I bent down little to pick something up, or if I swiveled in my chair.
The sensation went away in a few hours, but I'm tempted not to take any more until I get the plain ol' Mk I, Mod Ø, generic aspirin.
Did I not get enough sleep and am overreacting, or am I not paranoid (at least in regard to the Mother's Little Helpers)?

I'm not a medical doctor, but I know a bit about aspirin.
Ecotrin is a coated aspirin that's supposed to be easier on the digestive system than uncoated. They promote it for a healthy heart, but 325mg is far more aspirin than necessary for palliative purposes and risks gastrointestinal side-effects.
The "NSAID" in the name stands for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It's simply a way of describing the class of drugs into which aspirin falls.
People forget that aspirin is a drug. It's not perfectly harmless.
Dizziness is a known side-effect of aspirin, as it is with other blood-thinners. The effects may be more profound depending upon such factors as diet and fatigue and combination with other drugs or vitamin supplements.
If the dizziness is severe or if you discover other side-effects such as nausea, vomiting, digestive trouble, blurred vision, excessive bleeding or ringing in the ears then you should get your ass to a doctor ASAP.

I came down with "benign positional vertigo" a few years ago (benign my a$$, I told my doctor) which was really extreme. Think the worst sea sickness you can imagine that continues for days/weeks. I could barely stand with a cane. Lost 15 pounds in three days.
When I looked online for causes, the literature mentioned the usual suspects: head trauma, inner ear infection, sinus infection, a few others, and then "excess aspirin." Coincidentally, I had started that daily baby aspirin a few weeks before the onset of the vertigo.
I haven't taken any aspirin since...
