Is it Okay to use power cord for a Maxtor OneTouch IV on a III - Sam* - 06-28-2009 Gang, I have a maxtor onetouch III (300GB) and a Maxtor onetouch IV (500GB). I can't find the power cord to the III. Can I use the power cord for the IV with the III? The installation pdfs for both drives show power cords that, at least, look the same: a regular plug that connects to a brick and then the brick has a thin wire with circle thing that plugs into the drive. Thanks, Sam* Re: Is it Okay to use power cord for a Maxtor OneTouch IV on a III - StingMe - 06-28-2009 Gotta find the power requirements - can't rely on the physical connection as a guide...sometimes this info appears next to the jack (input) and it should also appear on the power adapter as well (output). Re: Is it Okay to use power cord for a Maxtor OneTouch IV on a III - Sam* - 06-29-2009 Sting Me, Thanks... your post inspired me to engage in more search: I finally found the essential page on the Maxtor site: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=186849&NewLang=en From that page I learned that I had the Maxtor III power supply plugged in to the Maxtor IV box during two long backups today. That page also had pics so I was able to find the missing supply! It just looked totally different so I thought it was for something else. It seems the power approach is quite different on the two drives, the III has a brick, an on-off switch, while the IV has no brick at all. For input the IV says 1.0 Amp Max, the III says 1.2 Amps. For output the III says 12V 3Amps while the IV says 12V 2Amps. Please tell me I didn't destroy the IV plugging in the III's power supply! But be honest. (It seems to be working... but I can't trust that, can I ![]() Sam* Re: Is it Okay to use power cord for a Maxtor OneTouch IV on a III - JoeH - 06-29-2009 Since the amperage on the III supply exceeded that needed by the IV, you should have done no damage to either. But if you had used them the other way around, IV PS on the One Touch III, you could have overloaded the PS and burned it out. Maybe I'll actually learn the basics of electricity some day. Sam* |
