MAJOR HELP NEEDED!! Lost 6GB of photos!!! - n-fin-it n-tro-p - 03-28-2006

OK, I'm in SERIOUS need of help here, and I'm to the point where cost is not an issue.

Recently I had a catastrophic failure on my Powerbook, and I couldn't start up at all. I connected to my Quicksilver in Target disk mode, and was able to copy all of my important data over to the Quicksilver, then reinstall Panther and recover. Everything seemed ok until I tried to open some of my photos and other items that happened to be on my desktop.

It seems that somehow in the initial transfer, EVERY file that was in my desktop folder got corrupted (ie: they are bad on the Quicksilver). Word files, text files, html, photos, even compressed installers. Most everything else I can deal with, but the loss of the 6+ months worth of photos is unbearable. I've searched all over for a solution, and tried over half a dozen 'Photo Recovery' programs which 'find' the files just fine, but do NOTHING to FIX them!

I need to figure out what happened to the files and attempt to fix it. All of the files are the correct size, and all of the info (i beleive) is there. Something happened that just made them unreadable.

Does anyone have a potential solution?

Thanks

Yikes, you've already erased the drive and reinstalled the OS, so there's not much that can be done now. Hopefully someone else will have better news.

Did you try to do a recovery app before deciding to reinstall the OS (Disk Warrior, Tech Tools, Drive Genius, Norton, etc.)? That would have been the way to go.

I have had some luck with Data Rescue even after a drive has been formatted. Start your powerbook as a tartget, run from your quicksilver and see if it can find them again.

ProSoft makes something called Picture Rescue. It might be worth a shot.

blu, I tried everything I could get my hands on before reinstalling. Nothing could fix it.

Wow, Dennis, that sounds amazing. I'm not sure how effective that would be now, I've done quite a bit since reinstalling, but maybe I'll give it a shot. Got nothing else to lose!

Thanks

Yikes!

I agree with Dennis R;
STOP using the Powerbook IMMEDIATELY...
Boot it ONLY to Target Disk, and work with it that way.
Try Data Rescue.

Can't hurt at this point.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to go burn a backup DVD-R...

Yikes...

Ka, tried PR, didn't help. It was one of those that 'found' the pictures that I already knew I had, but didn't do anything to 'fix' them.

You *might* be able to use Data Rescue or a similar app on the original drive, if you didn't actually erase the drive as blu suggests but rather just reinstalled the OS without first wiping the drive... but that's a long shot.

I've used Data Rescue on erased drives before, I have to second it's use.
Did you try BinaryBiz's VirtualLab, http://www.binarybiz.com/vlab/ ?
I've had some luck with that also.
Have you tried to copy the photos over to a pc to see if you can open them on it?

Given how much you've messed around with the drive, it sounds like it is beyond hope for an amateur and possibly for a pro. I'd call up a data recovery company and get an estimate before I'd touch the drive again. Then, when they give you the hefty estimate you can decide how much your pix are worth to you.
